New York Gears Up for World Cup with Ambitious Transport Plan
New York City unveils a comprehensive plan to manage transportation during the upcoming World Cup, featuring extensive street closures, dedicated busways, and enhanced public transit options to mitigate potential gridlock.

New York City is implementing an extensive transportation strategy, dubbed “Gridlock Alert on Steroids,” to manage the influx of visitors and potential traffic congestion during the upcoming World Cup. The plan, announced by the Mamdani administration, includes significant street closures, the creation of dedicated busways, and a substantial increase in public transit services to ensure the city remains navigable for residents and visitors alike.
World Cup Gridlock Alert Measures
The plan designates eight match days – June 13, 16, 22, 25, 27, 30, and July 5 and 19 – as intensified “Gridlock Alert” days. During these periods, which will begin six hours before matches and continue for up to three hours after, key thoroughfares will be transformed. Notably, 42nd Street will become a river-to-river busway, and streets surrounding Penn Station will be car-free zones for ticketholder queuing. Furthermore, a comprehensive ban on deliveries will be enforced across a large section of Midtown Manhattan.
During these restricted hours, only official World Cup shuttle buses, Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) buses, World Cup-branded vehicles, and emergency vehicles will be permitted on affected streets. The express shuttle buses will offer direct service for ticketholders to and from the New Jersey stadium, with pick-up and drop-off points at the Port Authority, Columbus Circle, and near Grand Central. These shuttles will utilize the Lincoln Tunnel for direct access to the World Cup venue.
Mayor Mamdani emphasized that these measures are aligned with global “best practices” for major event management, aiming to “minimize the impact of World Cup transportation on New Yorkers.” He stated, “As the eyes of the world turn to our city, our responsibility remains the same to make sure New Yorkers can still get where they need to go safely, affordably and without unnecessary disruption. Whether you’re heading to the stadium for a match, the park for a pick-up game or the office like any other day, our streets will work for everyone.”
Department of Transportation Commissioner Mike Flynn highlighted the role of delivery restrictions and busways in ensuring efficiency and safety. “Shifting delivery hours in Midtown and creating dedicated space for stadium shuttle buses will help minimize disruptions for New Yorkers during World Cup match days,” Flynn said. “This plan will also help ensure the vast majority of ticketholders will be able to get to matches seamlessly by mass transit, without driving or adding excessive congestion to our streets.”
Enhanced Public Transit and Infrastructure
The World Cup transportation plan goes beyond typical Gridlock Alert days, which usually involve advisories for drivers to reduce travel. The Mamdani administration is also introducing additional ferry services and promoting existing streetscape improvements. These include wider bike lanes on Sixth Avenue, expanded sidewalks in Hell’s Kitchen, and a dedicated bus lane on Broadway in Queens, designed to expedite travel for travelers heading to LaGuardia Airport.
The city is urging New Yorkers to sign up for alerts regarding traffic disruptions by texting NOTIFYNYC to 692-692.
