Waymo, the autonomous vehicle subsidiary of Alphabet, has issued a recall for approximately 3,900 of its robotaxis operating in the United States. The recall was prompted by 13 reported incidents where the self-driving vehicles entered freeway construction zones. While no crashes occurred as a result of these events, the company has suspended freeway driving operations in May as a precautionary measure.

The incidents, which took place in Phoenix and San Francisco during April and May, highlighted a failure in the autonomous system’s ability to recognise and appropriately react to road work. In Phoenix, six Waymo vehicles reportedly drove past ramp closure signs and entered pre-planned work zones on the freeway. Seven vehicles in San Francisco entered freeway lanes with active construction by driving between cones that designated lane closures in an adjacent lane. Waymo stated that the vehicles inappropriately prioritized avoiding other perceived hazards on the freeway, leading to the intrusion into work areas.

Waymo is currently developing a software update designed to improve the vehicles’ ability to detect and avoid work zones. According to a separate filing, the company plans to update its self-driving software to ensure that vehicles can accurately identify when they are approaching or entering a work zone and subsequently avoid entering them.
