Transportation for America (T4America), a program under the umbrella of Smart Growth America, has announced it is hiring a Senior Policy Associate. The organisation is looking for a motivated individual with a strong interest and knowledge in transportation policy to help shape the future of national transport systems.

This role offers the opportunity to engage with T4America’s comprehensive policy portfolio. A significant aspect of the position will involve leading initiatives in passenger rail and roadway safety, areas critical to improving mobility and public well-being across the country. The successful candidate will report to the Senior Policy Manager.

Key Attributes for the Role

T4America is seeking candidates who possess a compelling writing ability and a passion for advocating on transportation issues. Familiarity with the federal surface transportation reauthorization process is highly valued. The ideal candidate will also be adept at building relationships, with existing connections or a strong eagerness to develop rapport with congressional offices, staffers, coalition partners, and advocates.

A deep understanding of federal transportation policy and practice is essential. T4America expects the candidate to be a self-starter, capable of proactive work without constant direction, and a collaborative team player committed to advancing the organisation’s mission and principles alongside dedicated transportation professionals.

Focus on Passenger Rail and Roadway Safety

As part of the T4America policy team, the Senior Policy Associate will be instrumental in leading the organisation’s passenger rail work. This includes providing direct support to local partners such as the Southern Rail Commission, managing and overseeing federal rail grants, contributing to the development of new passenger services on various routes, and collaborating with congressional allies to influence rail provisions and funding in upcoming reauthorizations.

Additionally, the role may involve taking the lead on roadway safety policy. This would entail working closely with the National Complete Streets Coalition to enhance policy knowledge in this domain and focusing on the creation of streets that are safe and accessible for all users.

Responsibilities and Qualifications

The position requires a range of skills, with a salary range of $59,000 to $65,000. Candidates eligible for the higher end of this range would typically possess an advanced degree in public policy, transportation, planning, or a related field.

Previous experience working on Capitol Hill, in a state legislative body, or city council, or prior experience within local, state, or federal transportation agencies would be advantageous. Tangible experience with passenger rail policy development or implementation, coupled with experience managing federal grant processes and demonstrated administrative excellence, are also key qualifications.

Benefits and Location

The employment package includes fully paid medical insurance, with optional dental and vision coverage. Participants will also benefit from 401(k) contributions, life and disability insurance, three weeks of vacation in the first year, and 12 paid annual holidays.

The position is based in Washington, D.C. While SGA staff typically work in the office at 1350 Eye St. NW on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, no relocation assistance is currently offered.

Application Process

Interested candidates are requested to submit a cover letter and resume to [email protected]. The subject line of the email should clearly state “T4America Senior Policy Associate.” Applicants are asked to indicate within their cover letter how they learned of this employment opportunity.

Commitment to Diversity

Smart Growth America and Transportation for America are dedicated to fostering a diverse workforce.
