San Jose’s Street Activation Draws Crowds and Boosts Local Business

San Jose is experiencing a surge in public engagement and economic activity thanks to the successful activation of a pedestrianised street block. San Pedro Street, adjacent to San Pedro Square, has become a prime location for community gatherings and major sporting event viewings, drawing significant crowds and providing a substantial financial boost to surrounding businesses.

San Pedro Street, transformed into a vibrant public space with a colourful mural, has proven to be an effective venue for hosting a variety of events. Most recently, the street has been leveraged to host viewing parties for the FIFA World Cup 2026, with large screens set up to broadcast games. Nate LeBlanc, Economic Development Director for the San Jose Downtown Association, noted the initial uncertainty about public interest but was met with overwhelming enthusiasm. LeBlanc recalled people arriving as early as 9 a.m. for games, even in temperatures reaching the 90s, demonstrating a strong desire for shared public experiences.

The success of these viewing parties is a testament to San Jose’s diverse community. The events have seen considerable turnout, with cheers for teams like Mexico echoing through the downtown area. Collaborations with the San Jose Earthquakes soccer team, the Bay Area Host Committee, and the San Jose Sports Authority have enhanced the experience, with activities for children and a festive atmosphere complementing the sporting events. The proximity to San Pedro Square further enhances the appeal, offering attendees numerous dining and refreshment options.

Economic Windfall for Local Businesses

The pedestrianisation of the San Pedro Street block in 2022 has had a direct and positive impact on local businesses. Randi Musterer, founder and CEO of Sushi Confidential, described the activation of San Pedro Street and the Entertainment Zone for major sporting events as a “tremendous financial windfall.” Musterer reported that some of the busiest days in the past decade for her business have occurred during major events like Super Bowl LX and the opening weekend of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Musterer highlighted the crucial role of the City’s support in creating complementary events, such as concerts during Super Bowl festivities and the World Cup watch parties organised in partnership with the San Jose Earthquakes. These efforts have not only driven foot traffic but also enhanced the overall appeal of downtown San Jose as a destination. LeBlanc expressed a hope that these events will showcase the diverse offerings of downtown San Jose, encouraging visitors to return even when major events are not taking place.

New Microretail Opportunities

The activation of San Pedro Street also coincides with the opening of a new row of microretail shops on the ground floor of a recently renovated parking garage, directly across from the eateries. This project, managed by MOMENT San Pedro Square, is a collaboration involving SJ DOT, the Office of Economic Development, and the San Jose Downtown Association. The MOMENT shops celebrated their grand opening as the World Cup games commenced, adding a unique retail dimension to the revitalised streetscape.

These new shops, alongside the established dining options, create a compelling destination where visitors can freely stroll, away from car traffic. The development on San Pedro Street serves as a clear example of how reclaiming parking spaces for civic and commercial uses can foster vibrant urban environments.
