New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani released a map highlighting city-owned properties that could potentially be redeveloped into housing.
According to reporting by Henry Rosoff for PIX 11, "The Land Inventory Fast Track (LIFT) website shows all the property the city owns– and many are vacant.  However, not all vacant land is created equal. Some is literally under water, or too awkwardly shaped to be easily developed."
The city's website states that they are working on over 100 city-owned properties that could result in over 50,000 new homes. "Every year over the next four years, the Mamdani administration will issue requests for proposals to develop housing on five or more new sites, using public land to deliver homes for New Yorkers."
The site goes on to explain how even city lots with existing uses can be leveraged for new housing, like when buildings age and upgrades are required. In Brooklyn, a public library branch will be redeveloped to include new housing as well as upgraded library facilities.
