Without intervention, the current trajectory of implementing fragmented and varying emissions regulations across nations will lead to a stark divergence in public health outcomes. While wealthier nations may see a decline in preventable deaths from ground transportation pollution, poorer nations are predicted to experience a staggering 200% increase. This disparity highlights the inequitable distribution of the health consequences of air pollution.

The ICCT report projects that, under current trends, premature deaths attributable to road transport pollution will escalate by 74% by 2050, reaching 1.2 million deaths annually. This rate of increase is expected to outpace both population growth and the expansion of vehicle activity, meaning that by 2050, road transport pollution could claim a life every 26 seconds – nearly double the current rate.

US Impact and International Leadership

While the United States is noted for having “relatively cleaner road transport activity” compared to many other countries, the report points out that preventable deaths from vehicular pollution in the US still exceed those from traffic crashes, amounting to approximately 41,800 premature deaths each year. This translates to roughly four Americans per hour succumbing to illnesses linked to exhaust pipe emissions, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer, stroke, and heart disease. The US also bears the highest number of pediatric asthma cases globally attributable to road pollution.

Lingzhi Jin, a senior researcher at ICCT and co-author of the report, emphasised that achieving the ambitious goal of emission-free vehicles requires global cooperation and strong policy leadership, particularly from the United States. As a major automobile producer, US policy decisions can significantly influence the speed of the worldwide transition to zero-emission vehicles.

“Driving down the costs of electric trucks and buses would benefit both people in the country and in other countries, because of the U.S.’s role in the global economy,” Jin stated. “What the U.S. does actually matters because a lot of these other countries look at what is happening in the U.S.”

Regulatory Setbacks in the US

However, the report highlights significant regulatory setbacks in the United States regarding vehicle emissions. Historical policy shifts, including the rollback of emissions standards by the Trump administration, have hampered progress. While the Biden administration announced new rules in 2024 to increase zero-emission trucks and buses, these were reportedly rescinded shortly after the subsequent administration took office. Further delays in emission benchmarks for light-duty vehicles until 2029, cheered by the auto industry, indicate ongoing challenges.

Efforts by states like California and New York to implement their own lower emission standards are also facing federal opposition, with the administration attempting to override them. California, which experiences some of the most severe smog and traffic congestion, sees an estimated 22 premature deaths daily due to automobile pollution, a rate higher than New York’s annual toll.

Public Opinion and Hope for Change

Despite these challenges, a Pew Research Center poll from early spring indicated that 63% of Americans believe the federal government is not doing enough to protect air quality, suggesting a public appetite for stronger environmental protections. This sentiment could provide a foundation for renewed policy efforts and a faster transition to cleaner transportation solutions.
