The Urbanist, in collaboration with Eastrail Partners, is hosting a biking tour in Kirkland on Sunday, May 17th, to explore urban development along the Cross Kirkland Corridor. This event aims to provide participants with a direct understanding of how former industrial infrastructure can be repurposed for recreational and community benefit, led by Kirkland planning director Adam Weinstein.

In addition to the biking tour, The Urbanist is co-hosting a King County Candidate Housing Forum on June 10th. This forum will bring together candidates for King County Assessor and King County Council District 2 to discuss pressing issues related to land value, property taxes, and land use policy. The King County Council District 2 race is noted as hotly contested, featuring State Senator Rebecca Saldaña and Seattle Port Commission President Toshiko Hasegawa.

Focus on the Cross Kirkland Corridor

The biking tour on May 17th will be led by Kirkland planning director Adam Weinstein. The tour will specifically highlight the Cross Kirkland Corridor, which is a former railway line that has been converted into a recreational trail. This adaptive reuse project offers insights into urban planning strategies that integrate green infrastructure and active transportation routes into the urban fabric. The corridor serves as an example of how disused infrastructure can contribute to public realm improvements and sustainable urban development.

King County Housing Forum Discussions

The King County Candidate Housing Forum on June 10th is set to address critical aspects of housing and urban policy. The forum will cover the races for King County Assessor and King County Council District 2. The role of the King County Assessor, while not always high-profile, significantly influences land value assessments and property taxation, which are fundamental to housing affordability and development economics. The King County Council District 2 race is particularly relevant given its competitive nature and the candidates' potential impact on regional land use policies. State Senator Rebecca Saldaña and Seattle Port Commission President Toshiko Hasegawa are both vying for this seat, indicating a strong interest in the district's future direction regarding housing and urban development.

Engagement with Seattle's Comprehensive Plan

Beyond these specific events, the Complete Communities Coalition (CCC) is actively engaging with the public regarding Seattle's Comprehensive Plan. Throughout May, the CCC is hosting tabling opportunities at various farmers markets, including those in Capitol Hill, Columbia City, West Seattle, and the U District. These outreach efforts aim to raise awareness and encourage public participation in shaping Seattle's growth over the next two decades. The Comprehensive Plan is a foundational document that guides future development, land use, and infrastructure investments across the city.

Wider Urbanism Initiatives

The article also briefly mentions the second annual Seattle Super Saunter on Saturday, May 16th. This independent event encourages participants to walk from the northernmost to the southernmost point of Seattle, offering a unique perspective on the city's geography and urban landscape. These various initiatives collectively underscore a broader effort within the Puget Sound region to foster good urban living through expanded transit, addressing the housing crisis, and promoting pedestrian-friendly neighbourhoods.
