A COMMITMENT TO THE FUTURE OF DISTRICT 5

London Breed creates jobs as the Executive Director of the African American Art & Culture Complex As Supervisor, she will work to create more jobs by pursuing policies that support small businesses so they can expand and hire. To ensure people have the skills they need to succeed and businesses have access to skilled employees, London will create a skills training academy where ALL San Franciscans can learn new skills that will equip them for any job opportunity as a result of the changes in the job market. At the African American Art & Culture Complex, London works with youth, the community and artist every day to create safe, engaging, and creative opportunities that enhance their quality of life. Her hands on experience will guide her as a member of the Board of Supervisors to support policies that enhance and improve all resident’s quality of life. Whether using her professional experience to bring public and private funding together to support our parks and recreation programs in these times of budget tightening, or promoting after school wrap around services for youth to keep them engaged, learning, and on a path to success, London understands that there are many components to creating a positive quality of life for all residents.

Housing for Everyone As someone who grew up in public housing, London has a unique perspective on providing housing for all income levels. She is a strong supporter of rent control and strengthening tenant protections for our most vulnerable. She also supports a strong emphasis on creating more family and workforce housing to address the needs of middle class families that are struggling to remain in the city but are finding it harder to do so economically.

Supporting Small Businesses Accounting for more than 90% of the City’s businesses and more than half the jobs, small businesses are not only an economic driver, but help shape the unique character of the district’s neighborhoods. As an Executive Director who in essence runs a small business, London understands the needs of small businesses that often struggle to stay open. As Supervisor, London will support small business by creating a one-stop shop for business permits and inspections, to replace the numerous bureaucratic agencies businesses must navigate and that drive up their costs. London supports and will drive policies that support hi tech and emerging industries that will create new, high paying jobs and help add to the City’s tax base, which funds the critical programs we all use and rely on.

Supporting Transit Opportunities London Breed has ridden MUNI since she was a young child and will fight to ensure full funding without raising fares. However, she also understands that MUNI is one component of a complex transit system that moves residents, visitors and workers around the city 24 hours a day. She supports policies that make bicycling and walking safer and easier, by ensuring our sidewalks and streets are properly maintained, and we have dedicated bike lanes across the city.
